My Family Wants A Pool - Will It Be A Good Investment

Meghan Grieve • July 4, 2025

Deciding whether to add a swimming pool to your property depends on many factors, and you might be surprised to learn that, from a financial perspective, in-ground pools generally aren’t a great investment.

That said, not all upgrades to your property need to have a high ROI. Your family’s lifestyle and enjoyment of the property are important, and it's up to you to determine what adds value for your family. However, I'm here to help you make informed financial decisions.

Here are a few key points to consider regarding the impact of a swimming pool on your property's resale value:

Climate: In warm climates, a well-maintained pool can boost a property’s value. In cooler climates where pool season is shorter many buyers view the maintenance as outweighing the potential enjoyment, and may even consider it a burden.

Property Value: In affluent neighbourhoods where pools are more common, a swimming pool can add value to your property, especially if it is high-quality and has modern features. However, in areas with a lower price point, a pool can deter buyers who are concerned about maintenance costs.

Safety Concerns: While you might think young families would be drawn to a property with a pool, many parents view pools as a major safety concern and prefer more open backyard space.

A swimming pool can be a good investment in the right market and with proper maintenance. However, it may not always provide a high return on investment. Ultimately, whether a pool is a good investment depends on your individual circumstances and preferences.

If you’re considering a major upgrade to your property and aren’t sure whether it’s a good investment, reach out for a chat! I’m happy to provide an assessment based on your specific property and neighbourhood.
