Spring Flowers You’ll See Popping Up Around Guelph in May
A colourful guide to the wildflowers, garden blooms, and roadside blossoms that brighten Guelph each May.

In May, the City of Guelph starts to come to life with colour! Front gardens start to feature tulips and daffodils, magnolia trees begin to bloom, and the scent of lilacs fill the air!
Whether you’re enjoying a spring walk through Exhibition Park, Old University, St. George’s Park, or one of Guelph’s many tree-lined streets, May is a beautiful time of year to enjoy the city and embrace the change in seasons.
Here are the blooms you may find on your walk or drive around Guelph this spring:
Tulips and Daffodils: The Classic Signs of Spring
Tulips bring bold pops of colour in nearly every shade imaginable, while daffodils brighten gardens with cheerful yellow and white blooms. These hardy bulbs are among the first flowers to appear and are a staple in neighbourhood gardens throughout the city.
You’ll also spot smaller spring bulbs like grape hyacinths and fragrant hyacinths adding texture and colour to garden beds.
Magnolias, Crabapples, and Flowering Cherries
May is peak season for some of the most eye-catching flowering trees. While many people make the trip to Toronto’s High Park to see the famous cherry blossoms, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy stunning spring blooms. Guelph’s neighbourhoods are filled with beautiful flowering trees, from soft pink cherry blossoms to vibrant crabapple and magnolia trees, putting on a spectacular display right in your own backyard.
Magnolia trees are often the first to steal the show with their large pink and white blossoms. Soon after, crabapple and flowering cherry trees explode into clouds of pink and white flowers, transforming quiet residential streets into postcard-worthy scenes.
These trees are especially striking in Guelph’s older neighbourhoods, such as Downtown, Old University, General Hospital, Exhibition Park to name a few, where mature landscaping adds to the charm.
Lilacs: A Fragrant Favourite
By mid to late May, lilac bushes begin blooming in shades of purple, pink, and white. Their fragrance is unmistakable and often drifts through entire streets and parks.
If you grew up in Ontario, the smell of lilacs likely signals that summer is just around the corner.
Creeping Phlox and Other Early Perennials
As spring progresses, a variety of perennials start to emerge.
Creeping phlox forms vibrant carpets of pink, purple, and white. Bleeding hearts add delicate, heart-shaped blooms to shady gardens, while iris and columbine begin to make their appearance later in the month.
A favourite - Peonies also start to bud in May, with their showy blooms usually opening near the end of the month or in early June.
Ontario Wildflowers in Bloom
In natural areas and woodland trails around Guelph, native wildflowers put on their own spring display.
Trilliums, Ontario’s provincial flower, are commonly seen in nearby forests along with trout lilies, bloodroot, Virginia bluebells, and wild geraniums.
The University of Guelph Arboretum is one of the best local spots to enjoy these native blooms, as well as the Royal Recreation trail.
