Getting Around Guelph with Public Transit

Andra Arnold • March 12, 2025

Getting around Guelph is simple, thanks to a reliable public transit system that connects key areas of the city and beyond. If you commute to work, head to the University of Guelph, or travel to the GTA, options like Guelph Transit and GO Transit make navigating without a vehicle easy.

Keep reading to learn about Guelph’s well-planned bus routes and regional connections, which will get you where you need to go.

Guelph Transit: The City’s Bus System

Travelling across the city? Guelph Transit makes it easy. Bus routes connect residential areas, shopping centres, and key destinations like the University of Guelph and downtown. The system operates on a hub-and-spoke model that starts or ends at Guelph Central Station for seamless transfers.

Frequent and Reliable Service

Buses run seven days a week, with more frequent service during peak hours. Many routes operate on a 30-minute schedule, while express routes offer quicker travel times. Here’s a schedule for Route 99 Mainline:

  • Monday to Saturday: 5:45 a.m. until 12:45 a.m.
  • Sunday and civic holidays: 7:15 a.m. until 10:20 p.m.
  • Statutory holidays: 9:15 a.m. until 7:15 p.m.

Affordable and Accessible

Guelph Transit is a budget-friendly option with flat-rate fares, discounted passes, and free rides for kids under 12. Buses are accessible to all passengers, have low floors, ramps, and accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

Designated priority seating near the front helps individuals with disabilities, and drivers assist with boarding and securing mobility devices. For those requiring additional support, Guelph's Mobility Services offers specialized, door-to-door transit using accessible vehicles.

GO Transit: Connecting to the Region

GO Transit extends Guelph's reach beyond city limits, offering convenient travel options to the GTA and neighbouring regions.

Train Services

GO trains from Guelph Central Station (79 Carden Street) run on the Kitchener line to Toronto’s Union Station. They depart every four hours and travel for about one hour and twenty minutes.

Bus Services

Beyond the trains, GO Transit offers convenient bus routes from Guelph Central GO Station, connecting the city to many key destinations:

  • Route 29: Runs between Guelph and Mississauga, stopping at popular spots like Square One Shopping Centre
  • Route 31: Links Guelph with Georgetown and Toronto, providing a smooth alternative to train travel
  • Route 33: Connects Guelph to North York, opening up access to Toronto’s northern areas

Why Commuters Love GO Transit

GO Transit offers perks for those heading to Toronto or beyond:

  • Convenience: With frequent schedules and multiple departures every day, planning your journey couldn’t be easier
  • Comfort: Enjoy modern buses and trains with comfy seating and great amenities to make the ride more enjoyable
  • Cost-Effective: GO Transit’s competitive fares make it a wallet-friendly option, especially when you factor in the costs of fuel and parking

Your Commute, Your Community

Guelph’s public transit system reduces stress by making navigating the city and beyond easy and affordable.
