Top Paint Trends for 2023

By Jaden Steele

It’s official, colours are back. The days of sterile white and cold grays are gone. Rich and moody is the way to go, with neutrals leaning on the warmer side.

It’s all in the colour of the year. Enter the “Magentaverse” as Pantone calls it, with its star tone, “Viva Magenta.” Top companies followed suit, such as Benjamin Moore with “Raspberry Blush” and “Terra Rose” by Dunn-Edwards. “Redend Point” by Sherwin-Williams is a toned-down version of the vibrant magenta counterparts. Keeping on the jewel-tone train, but with a twist, Dulux predicts “Vining Ivy” a blue-green colour. Behr surprised many by announcing “Blank Canvas” as its 2023 colour of the year. A warm, white neutral, however, the neutral would act as a lovely pairing with its colourful competition.

With social media apps like Instagram and TikTok giving amateur designers a large platform, more and more followers are finding homes and projects they resonate with. There is no longer one right way to design. Fun maximalist houses, with no fear of colour or pattern are gaining popularity. With nods to previous generations indulging in bright colours, wallpaper, textures and patterns. Fun is back with a vengeance and this year’s colours confirm it. I find this style really works in mid-century homes and daring architecture.

For more sophisticated fun, a dark academia approach might be the way to go. Drawing from a gothic, romantic influence, this is one of my favourite styles at the moment. With its moody wall colours and wallpapers, it really compliments a century home. Explore rich colours such as maroon, aubergine, deep emeralds and navy, the possibilities are endless. Pair your wall colours with equality moody furniture and décor, a “Viva Magenta” accent would thrive in this setting. It’s a great way to incorporate antique and vintage pieces into your home and old-school textures like wainscoting, crown moulding, and exaggerated trim.

Anyone with a neutral palette, could use tones such as “Blank Canvas” with “Redend Point” or other toned-down hues as an accent. A neutral setting offers a little more room to play with texture and décor. Ultra -neutral styles such as boho design, maintain similar tones, while adding dimension with texture and pattern. For a more contemporary feel, you can pull nature’s neutrals for a more modern organic design.

The opportunities are endless. Regardless of the colour of the year or trendy tones and styles, it’s important to find something you enjoy and surround yourself with it. Paint is temporary, your home should be your sanctuary. If there’s no immediate turnaround, style for yourself, not the future owners.
