Moving While Expecting? Here’s How to Make It a Little Easier

Tips for Parents-to-Be Navigating a Big Life Change and a Big Move

Pregnancy is an exciting and emotional time, but if you’re also preparing for a move, it can feel like your to-do list is growing faster than your belly! Whether you’re upsizing to make room for baby or relocating to be closer to family or work, moving while expecting requires a little extra planning, flexibility, and support.

Here are a few helpful tips to make your move smoother and less stressful during this special season of life:

1. Start Planning Early

The earlier you can start organizing your move, the better. Pregnancy can bring unexpected changes to your energy levels or health, so give yourself plenty of time to sort, pack, and make decisions. If possible, aim to move during your second trimester — the sweet spot when morning sickness has usually subsided and you’re not yet in the third-trimester fatigue zone.

2. Declutter Before You Pack

Take this opportunity to simplify your life before baby arrives. Sort through clothes, furniture, and other household items, and donate or sell anything you no longer need. Less clutter means fewer boxes and a more manageable move.

3. Get Help — And Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

You shouldn’t be lifting heavy boxes or overexerting yourself. Hire professional movers, enlist friends or family to help, and delegate tasks wherever you can. If someone offers help — take it! You have enough on your plate already.

4. Pack a “Pregnancy Essentials” Bag

Think of this like a hospital bag, but for moving day. Include:

  • Snacks and water

  • Prenatal vitamins

  • Comfortable clothes and shoes

  • Any necessary medical documents

  • A copy of your birth plan

  • A pillow or heating pad for extra comfort

Keep this with you, not in the moving truck!

5. Make Your New Home Baby-Ready

Before you settle in, check for baby safety essentials — smoke detectors, outlet covers, secure railings, etc. If you’re planning to paint or renovate a nursery, ensure proper ventilation and avoid heavy lifting or exposure to fumes.

6. Find the Right Support in Your New Area

If you’re new to Guelph (or moving within it), connect with local resources for new parents. From prenatal yoga to birthing classes, midwifery groups, and support networks — Guelph has a strong community of care for young families.

7. Work with a Realtor Who Understands

The right real estate agent will help reduce stress by guiding you through the process with empathy and efficiency. Whether you need flexibility in closing dates, referrals for trusted movers, or help finding a family-friendly neighbourhood, we’re here to help every step of the way.

Final Thoughts

Moving while pregnant isn’t easy — but it is doable with the right plan and the right people in your corner. If you're getting ready to welcome a new little one and a new home, we’d love to help make the transition a little more peaceful.
